Capturing Digital Images
DIGITAL CAPTURE OF IMAGES IS GRADUALLY REPLACING THE USE OF FILM, particularly in some areas. One can debate the merits of film versus digital capture, but it’s not going to change what’s happening in the field of photography. Currently, photographers in several categories are more likely to use some kind of digital camera or a digital back that attaches to a conventional film camera than they are to use film.
The view camera has always been fairly big and cumbersome to operate, and having it tethered to a computer makes it even more so. Most people working with a digitized view camera or medium-format camera are in the studio, often doing product photography, especially catalog work. Here, the photographer usually shoots many similar items. The reproductions of the photos are small in size, and a consistent look is important to a product catalog. Eliminating film and Polaroid is both a time and money saver. Usually the emphasis is on getting many shots done in a day, often with relatively little change in the background and lighting arrangement.
Another area that has seen a rise in digital cameras is editorial or magazine photography. Always looking to cut costs, these areas often don’t have a budget for an assistant. The digital cameras used in these areas look like traditional 35mm cameras, and digital files are usually just large enough for a full page in a magazine. A digital file can be sent electronically to the editorial offices. This can save film-transport time and also reduces prepress costs, because the photos are ready to drop directly into the magazine’s computer page layout. These can be important considerations for a weekly publication.
The previous chapter, “Scanning Film and Using Digital Files,” discusses many of the concepts and responsibilities pertaining to digital cameras.
